...building a legal infrastructure that is responsive, action-oriented, and collaborative in its support of organizers on the ground and Black folks everywhere.

At Law for Black Lives, we recognize that how we move is just as important as our goals. As lawyers and legal workers committed to transformation and building the power of community-led movements, we seek to be grounded and accountable, and to build a reputation of genuineness and authenticity.
OUR APPROACH

Liberatory work is most successfully done through collaborative relationships grounded in mutual respect, trust, and accountability. It is important for us to build with the people we work alongside-- particularly those closest to and impacted by the issues-- to sign on to work with intention, and to endorse work we have thoroughly vetted.
We are up against forces that will not give up their power without a strong demand. L4BL takes its dedication to movement seriously and believes liberation is achievable. We are committed to continuous learning, sharpening our toolkit, and applying flexibility and nuance to our approach. We strive to be savvy strategists, reliable partners, and trustworthy stewards of movement's legacy and bring rigor to the work.
There are many powerful lessons to be learned and shared from movement struggles across the nation and the world. There is no need to constantly reinvent the wheel. However, we know that understanding the local context is key to most meaningful solutions taking root. What works in Texas may not work in Minnesota. What worked in Ghana may need to be reworked for use in the United States due to different considerations. Rooting solutions in a local context is key to lasting, transformative social change.
The law is not neutral, and neither are those who wield it. In the struggle for transformative social change, L4BL has picked a side. We help build power for the people and with the people. L4BL is committed to ensuring our work is in political alignment with the movement organizers and impacted people with struggle alongside, and that we follow in the spirit of the Black Radical Tradition.
